01 Start here

The inspection order that prevents false alarms

Most bad calls happen when a collector jumps straight to extreme magnification. Work from identity to measurement, then to one specific question at a time.

Identify

Denomination, series, subtype, date and mint mark. Confirm the design actually belongs to that era.

Measure

Check weight, diameter, thickness and edge against the exact year/type—not a generic coin spec.

3

Inspect zones

Date, mint mark, lettering, rim, edge, focal design details and known variety locations.

4

Compare & document

Compare with a known reference, change lighting, then save whole-coin and close-up images.

Important: a correct diameter or weight does not authenticate a coin by itself. Wear, tolerances, damage and counterfeit construction can change measurements.

Do not confuse a denomination with a single design

These are the predecessor or parallel families an advanced user is likely to encounter. The seven cards below are the primary inspection examples, not the entire history of U.S. coinage.

03 Critical transitions

Check the year before you judge the coin

These dates change composition, mint-mark logic or design. They are common sources of false “rare error” claims.

1942–1945 • Nickel

Wartime Jefferson Nickel

The temporary alloy used copper, silver and manganese. Wartime issues are identified by a large mint mark above Monticello; Philadelphia’s “P” appeared on U.S. coinage for the first time.

1965–1967 • Mint marks

No mint mark is normal

Circulating U.S. coins carried no mint marks during these years. Do not call a 1965–67 dime, quarter or half dollar “missing mint mark” based on that absence alone.

1964 → 1965 • Dime & Quarter

Silver to clad

Roosevelt dimes and Washington quarters moved from 90% silver issues to copper-nickel clad. Weight and the edge are fast screening checkpoints.

1964 / 1965–70 / 1971+ • Half

Kennedy composition changes

1964 is 90% silver, 1965–70 circulation issues are 40% silver, and 1971+ standard circulation issues are clad. Compare to the correct era before using weight.

1982 • Cent

Composition transition year

Lincoln cents can occur in different composition/type combinations. Weight is especially useful when separating bronze-era and copper-plated zinc pieces.

2004–2006 • Nickel

Design changes are intentional

Westward Journey reverse designs appeared in 2004–05, the obverse changed, and a new forward-facing Jefferson portrait with Monticello reverse arrived in 2006.

2026 • Semiquincentennial

One-year design exceptions

The dime uses Emerging Liberty, the half dollar uses Enduring Liberty, quarters use five anniversary designs, and the Jefferson nickel carries a 1776–2026 dual date. Do not compare them to a normal 2025 layout.

Classic vs modern • $1

Do not mix Morgan / Peace specifications

Modern numismatic Morgan and Peace issues are not the same specification set as classic circulating silver dollars. Identify issue era first, then use the correct reference.

Use these images as location guides, not authentication templates. A genuine coin can differ because of die state, strike quality, wear, toning and photography. For a suspected variety, compare with an authoritative date/mint-specific reference.
05 HOW

Mint-made feature vs post-mint damage

For advanced users, the question is not “does it look strange?” It is whether the feature is raised or incuse, how metal moved, whether it belongs to the die/strike/planchet process, and whether the era makes that variety possible.

Mint-origin features worth investigating

Doubled dieRounded design-level doubling with separation can be meaningful; compare known pickup points for the exact variety.
RPM / OMMRepunched or over-mint marks are era-dependent. Do not apply older hand-punched mint-mark logic to every modern coin.
Die crack / cudRaised metal because the defect is in the die; a cud is connected to the rim and removes normal design detail.
Die clashTransferred design elements from dies striking each other without a planchet; look for mirrored/positionally logical traces.
Struck-throughForeign material between die and planchet can leave a mint-made depression or texture with strike-consistent edges.
Off-center / broadstrikeStriking-position errors affect the whole geometry of the coin, not just a random damaged area.
Clipped planchetMissing metal originates before striking; nearby rim/metal flow can help separate it from a later cut.
Lamination / alloy issuePlanchet-metal defects can split or peel; compare the texture and whether the feature follows the metal rather than impact damage.

Common look-alikes and damage

Machine doublingTypically flat, shelf-like reduction of design rather than rounded hub doubling.
Scratch / gougeUsually incuse and may push metal to one side; direction can cross design elements unnaturally.
Rim hit / squeezePost-mint impact compresses or moves metal and often distorts adjacent detail.
Cleaning hairlinesFine parallel, radial or swirling lines plus disturbed luster; not a mint error.
CorrosionPorosity and pits from environmental reaction can resemble casting texture or planchet defects.
Plating bubbleCommon on copper-plated zinc cents; raised blisters are not automatically die errors.
Heat / chemical damageCan change color, surface texture and diameter locally; look for disturbed rather than struck metal.
Added / altered markA suspicious mint mark can show seams, tool marks or wrong placement. Position/style must match the exact die era.

Best practice: inspect the same suspected feature under at least two lighting angles. True relief and metal flow often become much easier to judge when highlights move across the surface.

06 Magnification

Use only as much zoom as the question needs

Over-magnification makes normal texture look dramatic. Start with the whole coin, locate the feature, then increase magnification only to answer a specific question.

1–5×Whole coin

Overall wear, strike, color, centering, obvious damage and rim.

5–15×Date & mint mark

Digit shapes, mark placement, lettering, edge and obvious die features.

15–40×Variety check

Doubling, die cracks, tool marks, surface disturbance and fine edge detail.

40×+Documentation

Useful selectively for micro-detail; do not judge authenticity from extreme zoom alone.

07 Counterfeit screening

Use multiple independent checks

No single microscope feature proves authenticity. The strongest screening combines physical specifications, edge construction, design diagnostics and surface evidence.

High-value or key-date coin? Do not clean, polish, acid-test, scrape or otherwise alter the surface. Photograph both sides and the edge, record measurements, preserve provenance, then consider a recognized professional authentication/grading service before a value decision.
